Zichron Yisroel is a small, warm and friendly Orthodox synagogue operating as an independent entity in the Kamin Education Centre. Its mandate is to create an Orthodox congregation for people of various levels of observance. It seeks to make the non practicing and traditional members of the congregation full partners in synagogue activities. Our Spiritual Leader, Rabbi Dr.Charles Grysman, is gifted with a wonderful understanding of people in today's stressed and hurried world, and he has a keen insight into their problems.

The Orthodox community has undergone a polarization over the past few years. As a result many of the non practicing and traditional Jews affiliated with the Orthodox movement have felt excluded from an environment which used to be home for them. Conservative and Reform venues have not satisfied their needs. They have also not felt comfortable in the many outreach centres for marginally involved Jews. There are also observant Jews who enjoy the warm and diverse atmosphere which Zichron Yisroel provides. The synagogue seeks to make all members feel a vibrant and equal part of a halachic community which can serve them and their children.

To this effect the synagogue has undertaken special educational and social programs designed to reintroduce a sense of community and religious awareness to a broad spectrum of Jews, regardless of their level of observance. It also provides special counseling and chesed programs via our Rabbi and lay members. Of special interest is children's programming designed to integrate children from diverse backgrounds, and to provide educational programs and prayer services where the Rabbi and youth workers are approachable role models. This will ensure a comfort level and positive attitude towards synagogue and observance, which facilitates continuity. An active Bat Mitzvah program is run every year, as well as Purim, Chanukah and other activities.

The ultimate goal of the synagogue is to bridge the denominational gap Judaism is experiencing and to ensure that a significant segment of Toronto Jews do not get lost as the gap widens.

We would like to be given the opportunity of welcoming you and your family to our services.
