Support & Friendship In The Face Of Cancer
ImageI am a cancer survivor and volunteer for the L'Chaim Cancer Support Group for Jewish Women.  It seemed to me that, after my diagnosis, I was suddenly transported into the foreign world of cancer.  I clearly remember the tremendous comfort that I felt while speaking to women who were already familiar with that terrain.  I guess that is why I am so committed to my volunteering with L'Chaim. Why I Volunteer: Noah Wallach
To Make The World A Better Place
To volunteer means different things to different people. The Webster’s dictionary defines it as “to offer or give willingly.” Ask an average student at the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto and they will define it as a mandatory, stressful eighteen-hour task. I disagree with both definitions. To me, volunteering is a lifestyle that focuses on assisting causes in need. I volunteer in order to help people. I volunteer in order to make the world a better place. I volunteer in order to see smiles on people’s faces. Read More  See More About Volunteering

I Appreciate The Privilege Of Giving by Ellen Michelson
Volunteering is part of my identity, an essential component of my life. Some years, my time commitment can only be small - some years, it has been larger. Certain Things Need To Be Told by Ann Szedlecki
“I promised myself that I would retire when I was 65, and then I would volunteer in the community.  January 31, 1991 - I closed the doors of my ladies wear shop after twenty five years, and started my life as a volunteer.”
Ann’s daily planner is full. Kosher Meals on Wheels, Circle of Care, and the UJA Federation Holocaust Centre of Toronto are her ongoing volunteer commitments, along with her 30-plus years of involvement with the Masada chapter of Hadassah-WIZO.  And this active wife and bubby still has time to take creative writing classes at the Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living. Why I Volunteer: Our Dad, Jerry Blitzer
Committed to our Community by Sherree Mosoff & Steve Blitzer
Jerry's children, Sherree Mosoff and Steve Blitzer, are proud of their father's tzedakah efforts. With love and respect, they composed this profile of Jerry Blitzer on the occasion of Father's Day 2003 in honour of his volunteer work.
For many years, our father Jerry has dedicated himself to enhancing Judaism and a Jewish way of life. Besides financial contributions and donations, he has given thousands of hours to charitable work - 26 years with JNF, 20 years with TJFLC...and the list goes on. Unlike many volunteers who primarily contribute to one cause, Jerry volunteers for numerous organizations and his enthusiasm benefits our entire community. Read More  See More About Volunteering

It's Something I Want To Do by Aliza Glatter
When I found out that I had to volunteer 18 hours a year for four years in order to graduate, I remember saying to myself, "Eighteen hours?? That's berserk!" When I finally got around to starting my hours, I chose to volunteer for a UJA Federation telethon. I wasn't very good at it but who cared -- I was getting my hours. But now, my perspective has changed. Volunteering is something I want to do, not something I have to do. When I return home from a day of volunteering, I feel a strong sense of fulfillment and a deep satisfaction. Read More  See More About Volunteering

An Obligation To Social Justice by Louise Somers
I know I do a lot of volunteering.  So why do I offer my time and talents to so many various groups?  Why do I volunteer?
I like to be involved and use my skills. I like the social aspects of volunteer work, I like to feel that I make a difference to our community, and I like learning new things.  I guess the essence of this paragraph is that I get a lot from my volunteer activities, a volunteering clich?. 100% Joy, Naches & Satisfaction by Carol Lavine

ImageThere is a rich reward for being a volunteer and part of a team - 100% joy, naches and satisfaction!

My involvement with volunteering began when I was in my teens, as a member of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization. And here I am, forty-eight years later, serving as a 'Nosh Coordinator' for the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.  What is a Jewish event without food?  Festival volunteers serve these noshes to the patrons, while they wait in line for the films.  To see the smiles on the patrons' faces, hear the giggles and the responses, makes the effort of organizing, shlepping and distributing so worthwhile. Championing Israel with the Internet by Shirley Anne Haber

Israel desperately needs our help to counter the dissemination of misinformation, disinformation and plain old-fashioned propaganda. There is a lot that we can and MUST do. Everyone Has A Part To Play by Susan Kurin

Give Yourself A Gift by Bernice Royce
ImageI began volunteering with Circle of Care about four years ago by delivering Kosher Meals on Wheels to various routes whose regular drivers were either away or sick.  It was soon evident that it was not just the meal being brought that was important, but also the chance to exchange a few words with another person.  It doesn't seem like much for most of us but it was a highlight of the day for many of the clients. Building the Baycrest Bridge Club by Lionel Axler

Poet Irving Goldstein (seated) is grateful to volunteer Lionel Axler for teaching him how to play bridge.

"Before I retired, my days were filled with work:  then there was a void.  I didn't need to make money.  I needed to fill time and to help somebody.  Baycrest was the logical spot and once I began volunteering there, everything fell in line."

Lionel's introduction to volunteering is best described in a poem written about him by his 92-year-old friend and fellow bridge enthusiast, Irving Goldstein. “Having time on his hands and nothing to fear, he decided to go to Baycrest to volunteer!” Read More  See More About Volunteering

ImageOur family connections reinforce what we learned at school, that we all have a responsibility to the community in which we live.

I wanted to carry out that responsibility by volunteering at both CHAT and Associated.  Later on, I also gave time to UJA Federation, Shaarei Shomayim Congregation, and to the Board of Jewish Education.

Building for our children, whether it’s bricks or programs, can’t be beat. That’s what keeps me volunteering. Read More  See More About Volunteering

Why I Volunteer
Community Involvement as a Camp Experience by Philip Ber
ImageI volunteer my time because I want to and I am able to do so.  I am very fortunate to have strong family who believe, as I do, that it is important to give.  My passion for working for and in the community began the summer I was on staff at Camp Solelim.   It introduced me to Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ) and its summer camps and for the past 20 years I have had the good fortune to be associated with this tremendous organization.  Sometimes I wonder why I spend time and energy working for Canadian Young Judaea.   It finally comes down to one thing - the kids. Mike and I have had many positive and exciting memories, but the one that really stands out in my mind is his bar mitzvah.

Why I Volunteer
by Esther "Babs" Friedman
ImageWhy do I volunteer? Because I was brought up that way by two parents, who although were quite poor, always managed to give of themselves. My mother lived well into her 80s and volunteered all her life. She worked for the soldiers during both World Wars and for Israel and was known for walking with her best friend from hospital to hospital to visit the sick. My father suffered the effects from mustard gas in the First World War. But he still managed to work with First World War veterans and later with the men returning in 1945.

Reflection on the Israel Mall, September 2002
The dictionary defines ?Volunteer as ?to offer (oneself or ones? services) for some undertaking or purpose."  How mundane. The sheer joy of doing something for another is so much more than that. Read More  See more about Volunteering
