Auguststrasse 25, a multi-media installation developed for the Koffler Gallery Off-Site, uses a complex mix of art, performance and sound to transform the historic sanctuary of Toronto's Kiever Synagogue to a performance space that recreates a typical Jewish home from 1920's Germany. By creating this imaginary address at the synagogue’s site, the project evokes two distinct geographic locations, two spheres of life, and two different moments in time, connected by the thread of Jewish history. The March of the Living is a two week educational experience taking place in Poland and Israel.  Hundreds of Canadian students each year mark three important dates in Jewish history.  On Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) students participate in a three kilometre march from Auschwitz to Birkenau as a silent tribute to victims of the Shoah. As L’Chaim co-founder Marci Tenenbaum has said, the L'Chaim Cancer Support Group for Jewish Women was started by the kindness of a stranger. Shortly after she was diagnosed with cancer, Marci was contacted by another Jewish woman who had undergone a similar treatment. This woman, Elizabeth Erlich, offered to share her own cancer experience and provide hope and support during Marci's treatment.  After the treatment was over, Marci and Elizabeth established L’Chaim, an official support group for Jewish women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. ImageSeventeen years ago, Esther Schwartz saw a need in the Toronto community for a strong Jewish network of education and support for diabetics.  Umbrella organizations offered guidance with the day-to-day issues of living a normal healthy life with diabetes, but it was hard for Esther to find information about diabetes within a Jewish lifestyle.  Together with Dorothy Zeifman and Alan Shefman, she founded a self-help group for Jewish people with diabetes, which later became the Toronto-based Jewish Diabetes Chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Association.
