Elder Abuse is most often defined as: “Single or repeated acts, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.” (WHO, 2002)  It can take many different forms and can be as varied and individual as its victims themselves.

"Elder abuse, including neglect, financial and verbal abuse, must be addressed, and so consciousness-raising on the subject of abuse is key," states Lisa Kronick, Circle of Care's Manager, Social Work.  "Vulnerable adults in this age group of 55+ have the right to seek out help in a safe and caring manner. We want them to know that we are here for them."

Circle of Care's Older Adults Facing Abuse (OAFA) program seeks to increase awareness of this sensitive and important issue through a multi-faceted approach.  Individual Counselling and Group Support are provided to clients and Education, Training and Outreach, and Consultation are provided to the agency's community partners.

According to Kronick, the essential step is to get the word out.  Creating Healthy Relationships is an Education and Support Group for Women 55+ who have experienced abuse by a spouse, caregiver or family member.  It has been specifically developed in order to supplement Circle of Care's complement of OAFA programming.

This English-speaking group will meet every Wednesday for 6 weeks beginning January 6, 2010 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am at Circle of Care, 530 Wilson Avenue (and Allen Road).

Kronick believes that the value of the program is evident in the words of a past participant who said, "You have given me my life back."
